Meditation

You have heard me say many times that the members of Grace Lutheran really do need to be “in the Word.”  If personal devotional time is not part of your daily routine, then you may not know how to get started.  So, here are a few suggestions.

You may consider dividing the time you spend in daily devotion into three parts.
  • Meditation
  • Self-examination
  • Prayer

Meditation is taking a portion of Scripture, a hymn verse, or a small section from Luther’s Catechism.  Read it through once.  Then go back to the beginning and think about the meaning of each word.  Remember that words often have several meanings or usages, therefore, ponder how the specific meaning of that word is set by the context of the paragraph you are reading.  As you refresh your understanding of each word, take it to heart.

As part of your meditation, see if the text tells you:

  • Who is doing the action?
  • What action is being done?
  • Who is receiving the blessings of the action?
  • Who are the people involved?
  • Where are the people living?
  • Why is this action being done?
  • When did this take place?
  • Is there a promise of God being kept?
  • In what ways does this same promise apply to you?
  • What truths are being taught or referred to?

As part of your meditation, recall other passages from the Bible that are the same or similar.

Consider:
  • What lessons are taught?
  • What wisdom is revealed?
  • What comfort is being offered?
  • What behavior or attitude is being corrected?
I hope that this helps you getting started with daily devotions or deepening time spent in the Word.  Next month I will share about how to practice self-examination.

In Christ,
Pastor Wenck
